Construction of the 77-metre long, 3-metre wide cycle and pedestrian bridge over the Plessur began in September 2019. It was officially opened in October 2020 after a construction period of fourteen months.
The limited space available presented a major challenge for all the companies involved. A total of 175 t of structural steel and 430 m3 of reinforced concrete were used.
The gently curving steel arch bridge with its delicate construction and expressive arch is a feast for the eyes during the day. The crossing is atmospherically illuminated in the evening, which further enhances the entire architectural appearance of the Italian Bridge and makes it a real eye-catcher.
The special bridge illumination was implemented in cooperation with the city of Chur, 2e elektro engineering Chur, Schönholzer Elektro Chur and GIFAS. One challenge was to ensure that the surrounding buildings, such as the Hotel Chur and the historical Villa Brunngarten, were not affected by obtrusive light emissions.
The LaneLED WALL system, the universal lighting system for a wide range of applications, was ideal for this task.
The infinitely dimmable LED lighting was integrated in the handrail over a total of 164 metres. It is barely visible from the outside and, as desired, only casts light along the bridge. The path is therefore optimally highlighted, thereby ensuring that pedestrians and cyclists alike can cross safely.
The LED light bar is characterised by the following customer benefits:
The result can be seen in the truest sense. The new connection for non-motorized traffic with the sonorous name «Italian Bridge» is presented in a visually attractive way and gives the new attraction elegance and playfulness.
Whether in public spaces, in parking garages, tunnels, road tunnels or on sidewalks, the LaneLED WALL system is versatile thanks to its compact design and excellent light output.
